Top Tips for Subtraction Questions
  • Subtraction means to take one number or amount away from another number. Subtracting a number from another number gives a smaller answer than the number you started with.

  • When reading Maths questions, look out for words such as 'subtract', 'deduct', 'decrease', 'take away', 'find the difference' and 'less than'. These words indicate you need to use your subtraction skills!

  • Write the largest number first then put the smaller number(s) underneath. This will help you identify the place value of all the numbers.
