EDGE

The lines that are created when two faces in a 3D shape meet.

EQUATION

A number sentence where one side equals the other.

EQUILATERAL TRIANGLE

A triangle with three equal angles and three equal sides.

EQUIVALENT FRACTIONS

Two fractions that are the same in terms of shape and size but expressed differently.

ESTIMATE

To make an 'educated guess' by roughly calculating an answer.

FACE

The flat part of a 3D shape.

FACTOR

A number that can be divided exactly into another number.

FORMULA

A group of numbers and symbols that show how to work something out.

GEOMETRY

The study of shapes and figures.

GRID METHOD

A way of working out multiplication sums by partitioning the numbers into smaller units, multiplying each part, then adding the results together.

HORIZONTAL LINE

A line that runs from left to right.

IMPERIAL UNITS

Units of measurement used in the UK before the metric system. Examples include inches, feet, miles, yards, etc.

IMPROPER FRACTION

A fraction with a larger numerator.

INTEGER

A whole number - either positive or negative.

INVERSE OPERATION

The opposite operation to check a calculation.

ISOSCELES TRIANGLE

A triangle with two equal angles and two equal sides.

KITE

A quadrilateral with two pairs of equal and adjacent sides.

LINE GRAPH

A graph used to display information that changes over time.

LONG DIVISION

A written method of dividing numbers.

LOWEST COMMON MULTIPLE

The smallest number that is a multiple of two or more numbers

MASS

The weight of an object.

MEAN

The average, found by adding a set of values together and dividing the total by the amount of values.

MEDIAN

The number in the middle of an ascending list.

METRIC UNITS

Metric units include centimetres, kilometres, grams, litres, etc.

MIRROR LINE

A central line - drawn through a shape - to show both sides are exactly the same.

MODE

The most common value in a set of data.

NEGATIVE NUMBER

A number smaller than O.

NET

The flat outline of a 3D shape.

NUMBER BONDS

Pairs of numbers that add together to create another number.

NUMERATOR

The top number of a fraction.

OBTUSE ANGLE

An angle between 90 degrees and 180 degrees.

OPERATION

A mathematical calculation e.g. addition, multiplication, etc.
