Parallel

Parallel lines are straight lines that always stay the same distance from each other and never meet.

Partitioning

Partitioning means separating numbers into tens, units, hundred, etc.

Percentage

A percentage expresses a number or ratio expressed as a fraction of 100.

Perimeter

The distance around a 2D shape.

Perpendicular

Perpendicular lines are at right angles to each other.

Pictogram

A chart that uses pictures to represent data.

Pie chart

Circular charts divided into sections or slices.

Place value

The value of each digit in a number.

Polygon

A 2D shape with straight, closed sides. Examples include triangles, squares, pentagons, etc.

Prime number

A number greater than 1 that cannot be divided evenly by any other number other than by itself or by 1.

Prism

A 3D shape with flat sides and two identical ends.

Probability

The study of how likely something is to happen.

Product

The answer when two numbers are multiplied together.

Proportion

The portion or part in relation to the whole.

Pyramid

A 3D shape with a polygon base and triangular sides,

Quadrilateral

2D shapes with four sides e.g. square, rectangle, kite, etc.

Radius

The distance from the centre of a circle to the edge.

Range

The difference between the lowest and highest value in a data set.

Ratio

A ratio compares values.

Reflex angle

An angle between 180-360 degrees.

Right angle`

An angle that measures 90 degrees.

Right-angled triangle

A 2D shape with three sides and a 90 degree angle.

Roman numeral

The numbers used in ancient Rome e.g. I, V, X

Rounding numbers

To adjust a number up or down.

Scale factor

The way to increase or decrease the size of a 2D shape.

Scalene triangle

A 2D three-sided shape with three unequal sides,

Square number

The result of multiplying a number by itself.

Symmetry

When a shape is the same on both sides.

Tally chart

A chart that uses marks to represent data.

Turns

The way a shape moves clockwise or anti-clockwise.

Two-step problem

A word problem that requires two mathematical operations.

Venn diagram

A diagram that shows the relationship between a group of different things and how they overlap.

Vertex/vertices

In shapes, the vertices are the points where two or more edges meet.

Vertical line

A line that runs up and down the page.

Volume

The amount of space a 3D shape takes up.

X-axis

The horizontal line on a graph.

Y-axis

The vertical line on a graph.
